Das Buch trifft sicher nicht den Geschmack von jedem. Ausgangspunkt ist die Beschreibung einer 2-dimensionalen Welt, welche von 2-dimensionalen Polygonen bewohnt wird. Es wird dargestellt, wie diese Wesen in einer solchen Welt leben, wie Ihre Wahrnehmung zu verstehen ist. Aus dieser Welt tritt die Hauptperson heraus und entdeckt die dritte Dimension, die er zunächst nicht verstehen kann.Die Erzählung kann einem Leser Denkanstöße geben, wie man sich andere Raumdimensionen lebhaft vorstellen könnte. Für eine zweidimensionale Welt ist dies nicht einmal so schwierig. Aber jeder, der schon mal versucht hat sich einen 4-dimensionalen Würfel vorzustellen, weis, dass dies sehr schwer ist. Das Buch bietet natürlich keine Lösung für das Problem, wie könnte es das auch, aber es hilft ein Grundverständnis aufzubauen.Insgesamt ist es meines Erachtens sehr lesenswert. Die englische Sprache kann für den einen oder anderen durchaus ein Hindernis darstellen, da doch viele themenspezifische Vokabeln verwandt werden. Trotzdem erhält es von mir, nicht zuletzt wegen seiner Einzigartigkeit, 5 Sterne.
Inhaltlich wirklich sehr interessant. Eigentlich ein Gedankenexperiment. Wenn man ein Buch lesen will, das einfach ganz anders ist als alle anderen, ist man hier sicherlich gut aufgehoben. Ich kenne jedenfalls kein vergleichbares Werk. Sprachlich erscheint mir das Buch auch sehr gut. Als nicht-Muttersprachler muss man vielleicht ein paar geometrische Formen nachschlagen, aber es hält sich in Grenzen und vieles erschließt sich. Klare Empfehlung.
Schlecht gedruckt - Überschriften auf vorherigen Seite, Fußnoten sonst wo .Und die im Text erwähnten Abbildungen fehlen, wobei unklar ist ob das so gehört?!
Abbott's sketches are an integral part of the story, yet they are missing in this edition. This is a bad bargain.
Delightful little satire in the vein of Alice In Wonderland or Gulliver's Travels. Sadly, this is a cheapo reproduction without the illustrations or footnotes.
A Classic! A book to read at least one time in a lifetime. Everyone will make its own connections within their own world. I recommend for anyone who is still driven by curiosity! Enjoy!
The book is very thin, the font are small and stuck together. Feels like a newpaper from the 1800s. Avoid this 'copy', you are better off printing it yourself. It was cheap, but an absolutely visually unpleasant copy of such classic. Shame.
Nachdem ich bei der Vorbereitung eines Vortrags über Graphene (einer einatomigen Lage von Kohlenstoff) auf dieses Buch von Edwin A. Abbott gestoßen bin, habe ich es mir gleich bestellt. Durch mein Studium habe ich eine gewisse Affinität zu mathematisch logischen Themengebieten und mir hat dieses Buch sehr gut gefallen. Die Reflexion der Gesallschaftsordnung des viktorianischen England auf die geometrischen Formen einer zweidimensionalen Welt, erzählt mit einem bissigen Humor, macht dieses Werk zu einem must-have für Naturwissenschaftler. Aber auch meine Freundin (Literaturstudentin) war sehr amüsiert bei der Lektüre dieses Werkes.
